What is TIMELINE THERAPY
What if you could ERASE bad memories? Erase your embarrassment or shame? Your fear,
your hurt, your anger? What if you could erase your broken heart? What if you could forget your
past and start fresh? Would you?
In The Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind, Charley Kaufman posits that there’s a
technology that allows you to do just that. Jim Carey’s character discovers that his ex has had
him erased; to escape his pain he in turn, erases her. The bulk of the movie takes place in his
mind, as the procedure is occurring. As he realizes that he’s not just erasing the pain, but all
the happy memories as well, his subconscious rebels and begins a desperate attempt to
subconscious minds desperate attempts to hold on to hold on to some remnant. By the end of
the movie, most of us would be convinced that it is better to have loved and lost than never to
have loved at all.
But….
What if there was a “technology” that allowed you to release the negative emotions while
retaining the actual memories? Timeline Therapy is a successful technique for letting go of
negative emotions and beliefs. By finally dropping all your old baggage you are able to create
a future filled with your dreams and aspirations. Best of all, it doesn’t take years of digging,
you don’t have to relive it, and you don’t even have to know what it is! The process is content
free: the story doesn’t matter!
What would your life look like if you eliminated your old anger, fear, sadness and guilt? What
would change if you dropped your negative beliefs like, “I’m not good enough,” “I’m not smart
enough,” “I’ll never make enough money,” or “I don’t know how to have a good relationship?"
What if it really is possible to start to build your future here in the present while leaving your old
limitations behind?
This isn’t about eliminating your ability to feel or remember. It’s about letting go of the old
negative associations so that you can make more appropriate decisions here in the present.
For instance, the classic “lid off the toothpaste/toilet seat left up” kind of fight that really
shouldn’t set off World War Three, but somehow does. Rationally we may know that we are
blowing this out of proportion. But, the part of our brain that has felt this emotion in the past
lights up and every other irritation we’ve ever felt – going back to the very first event – reignites,
so that instead of irritation we feel RAGE.
In Time Line Therapy, we call that first event the root cause. It probably is not the biggest or
most memorable even, merely the first one. We work with your unconscious mind to find that
event and discover what it is we need to learn from it. At that point we can release the root
cause, replace it with those learnings and watch all the intervening events between then and
now tumble off the timeline as well – just like pearls on a strand. Back in the present, you
become less explosive, your reactions more in line with reality.
Wouldn’t it be great to start a new relationship or a new job free from the expectations of the
